Meet Jamie Phear

I’m currently living in London, which I believe to be one of the best cities in the world. I’m originally from Flemington, New Jersey, a small town nestled in the middle of the garden state. If you asked me about Flemington twenty years ago, I would have told you it was boring and lame and there was never anything to do, but now I have more appreciation for it’s uniqueness.

I’ve lived on three continents, spending chunks of time in New Jersey, London, South Africa, the Caribbean, and Southern California. There is nothing I like more than exploring a new place, experiencing a new culture, and trying all the food I can along the way.

My husband, Dan, and I have been together for over twelve years and married for seven. Our journey has been far from normal, but I wouldn’t change a thing. He is fun and witty and kind and adventurous. We love to travel, eat, drink wine, and dance together.

After completing an MA in Comparative Literary Studies in London, I spent nearly ten years working in academia as an English professor. And, I loved every minute of it! I taught in the community college space in both New Jersey and California. Most of the courses I taught were writing-focused with a mix of reading, literature, and critical thinking, and to be honest, I thought that was going to be my career for life.

But, during COVID I found myself picking up my writing again. With more time at home than I was used to and a lighter workload, pockets of creativity began to sprout up and I found myself falling back in love with writing. A few years later, I responded to God’s invitation to take a sabbatical and during this time, my writing was awakened to new levels. In a short six months, I completed a draft manuscript for my memoir, a collection of wilderness poetry, and began working on a manuscript for a book on desert spirituality and wisdom from the wilderness.

At the end of my sabbatical, I found myself asking, what would it look like to lay down my teaching and say yes to writing more intentionally?

So, here we are!

I left my teaching jobs in August 2023 and set out to write the books I felt stirring within me, which is where you come in. This is the beginning of that journey. You can follow along in my weekly newsletter called A Pocket-Size Desert, which includes poetry, exclusive essays, resources, devotional series, and more.

I hope you enjoy reading more about what I’ve been learning along the way, and perhaps my journey can encourage you along yours in some small way.
